On June 25, 2020 the Grammy-winning country trio The Dixie Chicks lead by Natalie Maines officially changed their name to The Chicks, according to their social media accounts and official press releases. “We want to meet this moment,” the band says on their website. The change comes in the wake of the anti-racism and anti-police brutality protests triggered by the killing of George Floyd last month.

“Gaslighter” is The Chick’s upcoming eighth studio album – their first in 14 years – scheduled for release July 17 through Columbia Records. The album’s title track was released as a single March 4, along with its accompanying music video.

From Genius.com: “Gaslighter echoes the sentiments of previous heavy-hitting songs like ‘Not Ready to Make Nice’ but also features the upbeat country-pop and vocal harmonies they’re best known for.”

“In the 1944 film Gaslight, a man makes his wife think she’s going crazy in part by dimming the gaslight in their home. Since then, the term ‘gaslighting’ has been used to describe emotional manipulation designed to make someone doubt their own memory or perception.”

On February 28, 2020, The Chicks tweeted their definition of a “gaslighter.” The tweet reads: “A psychological manipulator who seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or in members of a group, making them question their own memory, perception or sanity.”

The Chicks’ Natalie Maines called out Donald Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic through a scathing Instagram post (March 31).

A video clip shows a series of Trump’s press meetings, during which he gives a range of vague, aloof and often untrue statements about the COVID-19 pandemic. Snippets of the briefings are interwoven with lyrics from “Gaslighter,” calling Trump a “denier,” “liar” and “big timer” who’s “doin’ anything to get your ass farther.”

Bulwark political columnist Amanda Carpenter is a CNN contributor and the author of “Gaslighting America: Why We Love It When Trump Lies” (2018). Carpenter argues that Trump systematically uses a five-step method to gaslight the public. The five steps: “Stake a Claim,” “Advance and Deny,” “Create Suspense,” “Discredit the Opponent,” and “Win.” Carpenter observes: “Oftentimes, Trump says something so long and so confidently—and with so much outside support—that you can’t help but wonder if he isn’t right. That’s gaslighting.”

In a June 26, 2020 tweet, Carpenter wrote: “In 2016, NeverTrumpers believed Trump was unfit to be President. Going into 2020, he’s proved it. Here’s 100 no-nonsense, no BS reasons why. The only hard part was keeping it to 100.”

The Chicks – Gaslighter

[Intro]
Gaslighter, denier
Doin’ anything to get your ass farther
Gaslighter, big timer
Repeating all of the mistakes of your father

[Verse 1]
We moved to California and we followed your dreams
I believed in the promises you made to me
Swore that night ’til death do us part
But you lie-lie-lie-lie-lied
Hollywood welcomed you with open doors
No matter what they gave you, you still wanted more
Acting all above it when our friends divorced
What a lie-lie-lie-lie-lie
You’re such a

[Chorus]
Gaslighter, denier
Doin’ anything to get your ass farther
Gaslighter, big timer
Repeating all of the mistakes of your father
Gaslighter, you broke me
You’re sorry, but where’s my apology
Gaslighter, you liar

[Verse 2]
You thought I wouldn’t see it if you put it in my face
Give you all my money, you’ll gladly walk away
You think it’s justifiable, I think it’s pretty cruel
And you know you lie best when you lie to you
‘Cause boy, you know exactly what you did on my boat
And, boy, that’s exactly why you ain’t comin’ home
Save your tired stories for your new someone else
‘Cause they’re lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Look out, you little

[Chorus]
Gaslighter, denier
Doing anything to get your ass farther
Gaslighter, big timer
Repeating all of the mistakes of your father
Gaslighter, you broke me
You’re sorry, but where’s my apology
Gaslighter, you liar

[Verse 3]
Just had to start a fire, had to start a fire
Couldn’t take yourself on a road a little higher
Had to burn it up, had to tear it down
Tried to say I’m crazy, babe, you know I’m not crazy, that’s you
Gaslighting
You’re a lie-lie-lie-liar
Oh honey, that’s you
Gaslighting
You made your bed and then your bed caught fire

[Bridge]
Gaslighter, I’m your mirror
Standin’ right here until you can see how you broke me
Yeah, I’m broken
You’re still sorry, and there’s still no apology

[Chorus]
Gaslighter, denier
Doin’ anything to get your ass farther
Gaslighter, big timer
Repeating all of the mistakes of your father
Gaslighter, you broke me
You’re sorry, but where’s my apology
Gaslighter, you liar
