Michael Steele, former chairman of the Republican National Committee said Trump is talking nonsense because mail-in voting and absentee voting are the same thing

President Donald Trump has been railing nonstop against mail-in voting, claiming that it is a major recipe for voter fraud — although he often adds that absentee voting is OK because it’s something different. But when Michael Steele, former chairman of the Republican National Committee, appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on July 31, he stressed that Trump is talking nonsense because mail-in voting and absentee voting are the same thing.

Steele told “Morning Joe” hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, “Mail-in balloting, mail-in voting is legitimate. It is done in at least five states. Every state has some form of it. You know it as absentee balloting. Yesterday, the president was like, ‘I love absentee balloting, but this vote by mail thing’ — Mr. President, they’re the same thing, OK? Just so you understand, an absentee ballot is the same as a mail-in ballot.”

Trump came under fire on July 30 for posting a tweet in which he floated the possibility of delaying the presidential election in order to avoid voter fraud. But Steele, like other Never Trump conservatives, has vehemently rejected Trump’s suggestion.

The former RNC chairman stressed, “Just so we’re clear, America: absentee ballot, vote by mail – same thing.”

  1. You can check by phone if the absentee ballot was received and posted. The mailing ballot as far as I know have no way of checking if received and posted.

Pls send phone # to verify voting by absentee ballot.

If you have a data base set up for millions of people being sent mail in ballots I need the phone # to verify my vote is counted as a mail in.

  2. No way is Absentee Voting the same as States mailing out millions of ballots to everyone who is on the Registry Lists. With Absentee Voting you must request a ballot be mailed out to you. So different from indiscriminate mailing out of ballots to everyone who is on the Registry Lists!

  3. Worked in Absentee at election office for 6 years. Mail in balloting and Absentee are different, one much more likely to be a legal vote than the other. Absentee ballots require a request to receive & questions are asked to verify who is asking for their ballot. We knew from their original registration the correct answers. Anyone at any address can grab & vote a mailed out willy nilly ballot, illegally. If someone else gets your ballot by mail and you were going to vote in person or early vote, good luck proving it was not you, & that someone already stole your ballot or a fake copy & voted it. I am glad I’m retired. What a nightmare.
